In 2012, childhood friends Jesse Glendinning (lead vocals, ukelele) and Derek Campbell (acoustic guitar, backing vocals) began performing in their hometown of Jupiter, FL under the name The Helmsmen.
The band’s current 5 piece lineup was completed in 2014 with the arrivals of Jacob Constantakos (electric guitar, melodica), Micko Paparo (bass), and Samuel King (drums, backing vocals). The Helmsmen’s sound is a unique blend of indie rock and island music, with influences including The Beatles, Jack Johnson, Bob Marley, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers (along with many hip-hop and alternative artists who are too numerous to list here).
Though they initially became popular as a local cover band for hire, in 2014 The Helmsmen made a transition into original music. Their first release, The Homework EP, was recorded in early 2015 at guitarist Derek Campell’s house. The tracks were then mixed and mastered at Legacy Sound Studios (Wellington, FL). The Homework EP is expected to be released in June 2015.
